Valerija Peles, AC for Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, and Redcar and Cleveland

After closing the 2018 with our traditional and very popular Christmas lectures, organised by Phil Moxon at Teesside University for Year 10 students, we have started the New Year by launching new problem solving sessions for Year 12/13 students at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form.

On 2 February, our four-hour long Saturday workshop saw students from Stockton Riverside College, Middlesbrough College and Caedmon College Whitby all working collaboratively on challenging mathematical problems – in spite of the snow and slow traffic! The next session will take place on Saturday 16 March.

Teesside University traditionally hosts Year 13 STEP sessions organised by the AMSP and they have offered to host the course again this year. A 15-week course has been designed to prepare students for the maths admissions tests required by universities such as Cambridge, Durham or Warwick.

Other activities in Middlesbrough and Stockton area included the Cleveland GCSE Teacher Network at St. Peter’s Voluntary Academy, which has now hosted the second meeting this academic year, and Raising Confidence with Problem Solving at Teesside University, which hosted about 10 teachers on 5 February. 11-16 schools now definitely have a plenty to choose from the plethora of teacher and student events the AMSP offers.
