Valerija Peles, AC for Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, and Redcar and Cleveland

Year 10 girls have enjoyed a full day of maths workshops and activities organised by AMSP at the STEM Centre at Middlesbrough College. Six secondary schools from the Middlesbrough, Stockton and Sunderland area participated in the event. Students attended two workshops which demonstrated how we can use maths to solve real-life problems. Students really enjoyed short talks by a group of university students and lecturers from Durham, Teesside and Northumbria University, and they had an opportunity to ask questions about their careers and what encouraged them to study maths post-16.

The day was enriched by Aoife Hunt, who inspired students with her talk on using maths when modelling big crowds, such as Glastonbury Festival or football matches. We need more female mathematicians for the future. The value of seeing different role models will hopefully attract more girls into maths and engineering. If you’d like your students to experience a similarly inspirational event, explore our events listing to find the right opportunities for you.
