The new academic year started with an exciting maths event at Sunderland University on 12th September.

Phil Moxon, a long standing AMSP North East Area Coordinator, who retired this autumn after a long career in maths education, organised this event for more than fifteen schools from Sunderland and Gateshead.

The students had an opportunity to participate in two maths lectures/workshops delivered by lecturers from Newcastle University, Sunderland College and the AMSP. The presenters’ aim was to showcase what post-16 maths could look like and what are possible careers involving mathematical skills.

Ben Sparks inspired students with his talk on Magical Maths and Zoe Griffiths, in her talk on Maths in the News, explained how we can use statistics and probability to make informed decisions and question information presented to us in the media.

Sunderland University student ambassadors helped the event to run exceptionally smoothly and did a great job of making everyone feel welcome.
