In February 2020, we held Mathsplosion@Durham across two days. Eight schools attended on each day, with each school bringing ten students. Unfortunately the snowy weather impacted attendance on the second day, but all the schools who did make it rated the day as excellent.

We started each day with a hands-on competition, where students had to construct 3D solids and then apply their skills of generalisation to develop mathematical formulae:

The photo shows a 2x2x2 cube and a 1x1x4 cuboid. For a generalised cuboid of LxWxH, how many cocktail sticks are required for its construction and how many midget gems?
