On Monday 20 January 2020, St Robert of Newminster Catholic School in Washington hosted our Statistics for Beginners professional development day for teachers.

Some teachers have been teaching Statistics for many years, while some have never taught the subject before or have just started teaching it this academic year. In all cases, we looked at the content that is new to Statistics in Year 12. We looked at ways of introducing Binomial Distribution and hypothesis testing using real-life scenarios, and discussed exam questions with an emphasis on interpretation and mathematical modelling.

The icing on the cake was the Large Data Set session that was led by Tom Button, the AMSP’s technology expert, and was thoroughly enjoyed by teachers. We plan to organise another Statistics professional development day in the Autumn Term in 2020, with chosen topics such as probability and the Normal Distribution.
