An audience of 13 enthusiastic maths teachers attended a half day of professional development at Walton Girls High School and Sixth Form in Grantham, exploring ways of teaching the Large Data Set. The delegates were all following the AQA or Edexcel specification, and had a mixed range of experience working with the LDS and associated technology.

Some teachers were seeking advice on how to develop strategies for regular working with the LDS, while others wanted to consider how different technologies could be used to explore large data sets. The teachers mixed effortlessly together throughout the afternoon, supporting each other during ‘hands-on’ GeoGebra sessions. The last forty-five minutes were spent looking at how the LDS is assessed by the different exam boards, with consideration given to mark schemes and examiners’ reports. All the delegates gratefully received electronic copies of the resources used.

The feedback was very positive, as reflected in the comments below.

  • “Excellent delivery and realistic view of what we should be doing.”
  • “Really appreciated the opportunity to get to grips with GeoGebra and enjoyed comparing examination questions from the different examination boards.”
  • “Very good use of technology and some great ideas for lessons.”
