Chris Savage
Having lived in this area for most of my life, I have a real passion for promoting Essex for all the right reasons. I’ve been teaching maths for most of my career in schools and colleges in the area, and have experience with A level maths, Further Mathematics and STEP, as well as 11-16 education. I am looking forward to making the most of opportunities to work with multiple schools, helping to provide opportunities for other teachers and hopefully benefitting even more students in this new role.
I am particularly looking forward to helping to provide enrichment events for students, as for me, watching young people get engrossed in problem solving is one of the most enjoyable parts of teaching maths.
I am also looking forward to supporting the growth of Core Maths, which will expand massively in the next couple of years. Core Maths is aimed at students who have at least a 4 at GCSE, but opt not to study AS or A level Mathematics. This qualification provides students with useful mathematical skills that are valued by employers and universities, such as using data effectively to make quantitative decisions, using probabilities to predict outcomes and equipping students to manage their own personal finances.
Joe Bailey
I’ll be working alongside Chris covering Essex and Suffolk. Like Chris, I’ve lived most of my life in and around the East of England, and I am currently finishing my PhD in Mathematical Biology at the University of Essex, where I’m also currently lecturing and teaching.
Before working with the AMSP I was based at the Royal Institution as part of the maths outreach team. I have continued to work with schools and colleges to provide enrichment and engagement activities for students of all ages and across all levels of interest/engagement within the subject.
I am looking forward to continuing the enrichment offering of the AMSP and will mostly be responsible for organising and running such activities, from large scale events with many students to smaller activities run at individual schools. These can be for students engaged with the subject who are looking to push their knowledge further, or for students who are less enthused about maths but might benefit from a look at a topic not covered in the usual curriculum.
