Home > Developing A level Pedagogy: Maths Hubs Work Group

Across the South West, the Maths Hubs are working with teachers on collaborative projects, one of these being the Developing A Level Pedagogy Work Group. The content and structure of the Work Groups will vary depending on the Work Group lead and the participants, and each group aims to develop and sustain regional communities of practice involving collaboration between teachers.

The focus of the recent CODE Maths Hub Work Group was to consider Teaching in the Covid Era, which was designed to look at ways of improving A level Mathematics blended teaching and address some of the issues faced by teachers and their students.

The discussion focused on ways of teaching online and supporting students with ’catching up’. Teachers shared their experiences and some possible solutions on the following issues:

  • Considering gaps and fluency in student knowledge and how to address these
  • Student attendance due to self-isolation and teaching or learning from home
  • Achieving full coverage of the material for Year 12 and 13.

Small group discussions enabled teachers to share their thoughts and to focus on key elements which they could adapt for their situations. The resilience, determination and willingness of teachers to embrace a variety of strategies to help address the issues arising from imposed and unusual working conditions to ensure that students were best supported was overwhelming. Various online assessment resources were mentioned including, but not exclusively, Dr Frost Maths, HegartyMaths, and the resources on Integral, as well as the end of section assessments.

We received feedback from a participant who told us what they found most useful, “Hearing what other schools and colleges were doing. It was also reassuring to hear that other schools were having the same issues.”

In response to developing something in their own practice as a result of this event, the following feedback was received:

  • “I’m insisting that everyone completes the Integral Topic Assessment as tests so that we have more evidence for CAGs, as well as to have a good formative assessment before we move on.”
  • “We are going to try to offer a virtual support session for college students.”
  • “I’m going to look more at some of the online resources to see how we can use them more.”
  • “Explore more of the functions available in Teams – the whiteboard adds an interesting element to the lesson.”
