We’re pleased to once again be running our popular online course for students, Setting Out In Problem Solving.

While it’s mainly designed for Year 12 students who’d like to develop their problem-solving skills, it’s also suitable for Year 13 students and teachers who’d like an introduction to the admissions testing process. We’re running various sessions from 17:00-19:00, starting in December.

Setting Out In Problem Solving consists of a two-hour practical online session, where we’ll consider problem-solving strategies and share examples of them being used on problems that students may find unfamiliar, demonstrate how students can present solutions to problems to aid communication, and share where they can find additional support to help with preparation for university admissions tests. Students will be given problem-solving activities to work on during the session.

We’ve received some great feedback from those who have previously attended a Setting Out In Problem Solving session, including:

  • I would definitely recommend this event to anyone who is thinking about doing a maths degree but also A level students who struggle with problem-solving questions, whether they wish to continue with maths or not.
  • You’ve helped encourage me to look at universities that do have additional examinations as entry requirements.
  • I liked the explanation of the starter problems, which opened my eyes to simpler and more effective methods I wouldn’t have previously considered.

We’re planning to run more sessions later in the 2021-22 academic year. If you’d like to be notified when these sessions are available to book, you can subscribe to receive our latest news.

Setting Out In Problem Solving is open to applications from schools and colleges in England who are registered with the AMSP for the 2021-22 academic year. We only require one teacher application from each school or college on behalf of all students and teachers that plan to attend. If you’re not sure if your school or college is registered with the AMSP, please submit an application for this course and we’ll automatically check this for you. If you know your school or college isn’t registered with the AMSP for the 2021-22 academic year, you can register now on our website.
