Competitions are a great opportunity for students to develop their teamwork skills and to try something different with a fun element.

There are many maths competitions that take place within and between different schools. The AMSP has been running its annual Maths Feast competition for students in Year 10 throughout February and March. We really hope that you were able to enter a team or two for this year’s competition. If you weren’t able to attend a Feast, you can register on the AMSP website to receive materials to run your own DIY Maths Feast! I also love the AMSP’s Dragon Quiz which is a shorter, fast-paced competition that can be managed within a lesson, with versions available for students in Year 8 or Year 10. Please speak to your local Area Coordinator if you’d like your school to participate in either of these competitions. We may also be able to run other competitions if that’s something you’d like to discuss.

The Wealden Cup is a competition that runs across different subject areas between schools and colleges in East Sussex. It’s managed by Fenella Tallon who is the Coordinator for the East Sussex Post-16 Education Improvement Partnership. This year, for the first time and in collaboration with the AMSP, there was a maths competition for A level students in Year 12 and Year 13! Uckfield College took first place with 100% in both Year 12 and Year 13. In Year 12, they were closely followed by Seaford Head School and Heathfield Community College who took joint second place. In Year 13, Bexhill College and Uplands Community College took 2nd and 3rd places respectively. We’d like to congratulate the students on their achievements and thank Fenella for including maths in this year’s competition. Of course, we’ll have to ‘watch this space’ for the winner of the Wealden Cup itself!

If you missed out this year or if you’d like to use the competition materials in your school, you can request access by emailing Hazel Santineer ([email protected]) or, if your school is in East Sussex, Fenella Tallon ([email protected]).

Fenella wished to add, “Many thanks to Hazel Santineer for writing the questions and moderating the competition. We had great feedback from the schools and colleges that took part.
