Recently we held another of our online Moving on with Maths events. We’ve previously held one of these events with the University of Nottingham and the University of Lincoln but, this time, we were joined by staff from Loughborough University and the University of Northampton.

It was an online event which students were able to join either from home or from school. They heard about the variety of maths and maths-related degree courses, got tips for what to look for in the wide range of options available to them, and got a taste of some problems from some of the admissions tests which are increasingly being recognised by universities. As well as maths degrees, we also found out about primary maths teaching, and accountancy and finance. We hope to run more of these events in the future!

A simple way to encourage your students to look at their options is to let them know about the AMSP’s free monthly web-magazine, SUMS (Steps to University for Mathematical Students). SUMS includes interviews with maths graduates, timely advice on the stages of applying to university, maths puzzles and problems, and the opportunity to have work published. To extend the content covered in the magazine, we’re running a SUMS enrichment day at universities across the country – the one nearest to the East Midlands region is at The University of Sheffield.

We’re running a Next Steps for Your A level Students one-day course for teachers in Corby, North Northamptonshire on Wednesday 22 June 2022. It will share information about the university admissions process, which courses benefit from students having studied Level 3 maths, and how you can help your students to prepare for the transition. It will also look at the various admissions tests and how to help your students prepare for these.

If you already know that you’ll be supporting students in preparing for specific admissions tests, we offer some excellent On Demand Professional Development (ODPD) courses that cover both the general background information and topic-specific guidance. You can access our Preparing your students for the MAT and the TMUA and Preparing your students for STEP ODPD courses on the AMSP website.

See Chris Luke’s article from the East Midlands newsletter for more information about the support and tuition available through the AMSP for students who are preparing for University Admissions Tests.
