Do you have students who are studying AS/A level maths or further maths?

Our Setting out in Problem Solving course is open for applications.

What is Setting Out in Problem Solving

As you know, problem-solving is essential to success at A level maths, but students often find it difficult to develop the skills required. Our Setting Out in Problem Solving course provides tips and strategies to support students’ problem-solving skills with questions and worked solutions for them to practice.

The course will introduce admission tests and discuss how some universities offer lower offers to students who take these tests. We will also demonstrate that the tests include questions accessible to all A level students. The maths used during the course will be AS level maths; much of it is from lower school years.

The course will also provide other sources of support from the AMSP and other providers, which support students with their problem-solving skills and preparation for admission tests.

Who would benefit from attending this course

This course would suit all AS/A Level Maths or Further Maths students, not just those considering mathematics at university or who may apply to universities mentioning admissions tests. Teachers are welcome to attend, and there is a section at the end specifically for teachers.

How to book your students onto the course

One teacher from your school/college needs to sign up on behalf of all students at your school/college. Students attend one of three identical sessions (11, 12 or 13 December) running between 5-7 pm. This allows students to attend the session that best fits their other commitments. Students attend these sessions by themselves as they access the course from home via their school integral log-in (full joining instructions will outline how to do this).

I thought it was very helpful, I liked the various sources of support they gave and more generalised tips for problem solving as opposed to exclusively going through specific questions.

I do feel more informed regarding university entrance requirements for mathematics courses as I was not aware of how each test worked in terms of the results and informing the university. In addition, the importance of problem-solving skills were explained very well in this session.

The questions were explained step by step, which made it easy to understand. Also, there were very useful tips on how to approach problem-solving questions.
