COURSE OVERVIEW
Strengthen your teaching of Core Maths with expert-led professional development focused on subject knowledge, pedagogy and real-world mathematical thinking.
Our Core Maths Common Topics course is for teachers who are new to teaching Core Maths, returning to the subject, or teaching other Level 3 qualifications that use mathematics.
Across six online sessions, you will explore key topics common to the main Core Maths specifications, including estimation, sampling and data, and financial maths. As well as explore how to use familiar statistical ideas and current issues in the news to bring mathematical methods to life.
Delivered in a small-group setting, you will have the opportunity to interact with expert tutors and other teachers, discuss subject knowledge, teaching approaches, and reflect on how ideas can be applied in the classroom. The course will help you deepen your understanding of Core Maths content, build confidence in teaching the subject, and develop approaches and resources that can be used directly with students.
6 online sessions
The six online sessions will last 90 minutes and be held via Zoom.
You will also have one year of access to course-specific resources online via MEI’s learning platform, Integral.
Please ensure you are able to attend at least 75% of your chosen scheduled sessions before applying.

Study Schedule
The entire experience was highly interactive, offering opportunities for all participants to engage actively. I gained valuable insights from colleagues about practices implemented in various schools.
This course has significantly enhanced my teaching practice by deepening my understanding of real-world applications of mathematics. The training introduced practical strategies for contextual learning, which I have started integrating into my lessons to make mathematical concepts more relevant and engaging for students.

This course covers a selection of the topics from each of the major specifications, but should not be considered comprehensive.
This course will take a peer-to-peer approach: we will be delivering subject knowledge whilst modelling recommended pedagogies. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on the practices demonstrated as well as their own teaching approaches to the content. If you require even greater focus on pedagogy, we recommend our extended professional development programmes.
