COURSE OVERVIEW

Build confidence in teaching AS and A level Statistics with our course designed to strengthen both subject knowledge and classroom practice.

Our Subject Knowledge Live | AS/A level Mathematics: Statistics course is for teachers who are new to teaching statistics at AS and A level, as well as those looking to refresh and refine their approach. Across eight interactive sessions, you will explore key topics from the major A level Mathematics specifications, with a focus on effective modelling, the thoughtful use of technology, and approaches that support students in developing secure understanding.

Throughout the course, tutors will model pedagogy alongside subject knowledge, giving you the opportunity to reflect on teaching approaches, discuss common challenges and share ideas with other teachers.

8 online sessions

The eight online sessions will last 90 minutes and be held via the Big Blue Button (BBB), which will be accessible via MEI’s learning platform, Integral.

You will also have one year of access to course-specific resources online via MEI’s learning platform, Integral.

The course will run once per term during the academic year; in the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms. Please view or download the study schedule for specific dates.

Please ensure you are able to attend at least 75% of your chosen scheduled sessions before applying.

It has given me the confidence in my ability and helped refresh my knowledge on particular areas like hypothesis testing.

It went into depth on some topics which I just had a surface understanding of – particularly binomial and normal distribution. The use of Desmos/Amplify was brilliant and is something I definitely hope to include in my teaching. I feel like I now have a much deeper understanding and pieces are fitting together a bit better!

The DfE provides funding so that places on this course are free to teachers from state-funded schools and colleges in England. For those who do not meet this criterion, the course fee of £215 will apply.

Priority will be given to teachers in state-funded schools and colleges in England. Where we have spare capacity, we extend our support to other teachers and operate a waiting list.

Teachers who are new to offering the Statistics element of the AS and A level Mathematics course, and those who are seeking to refresh their approach in this context.

Please note: this is not suitable for those wishing to study the content in order to gain an A level qualification.

Yes. Trainee teachers are eligible to join all Subject Knowledge Live courses, however the standard course fee will apply. If you have secured a role in a state-funded school or college in England, or are currently undertaking a placement in one, and the school is willing to be named on your application, you will be eligible to attend free of charge.

This course covers a selection of the topics from each of the major specifications, but should not be considered comprehensive.

This course will take a peer-to-peer approach: we will be delivering subject knowledge whilst modelling recommended pedagogies. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on the practices demonstrated as well as their own teaching approaches to the content. If you require even greater focus on pedagogy, we recommend our extended professional development programmes.

This course runs each term, with a range of course days and times available throughout the academic year to support busy teaching schedules. If the current course dates are not suitable, please check back for future listings or stay informed about upcoming course dates.
