COURSE OVERVIEW
Build your subject knowledge and confidence in teaching the mechanics element of the AS/A level Mathematics qualification.
Our Subject Knowledge Live | AS/A level Mathematics: Mechanics sessions will deepen your understanding of key mechanics topics. The sessions will all concentrate on the modelling of subject knowledge delivery, including the use of technology and will cover content from all major specifications for A level Mathematics.
During the course, you will explore effective ways to approach challenging content and reflect on how to support students’ learning. You will have the opportunity to discuss ideas and approaches with expert tutors and other teachers, helping you develop subject knowledge and classroom practice together.
9 online sessions
The nine online sessions will last 90 minutes and be held via the Big Blue Button (BBB), which will be accessible via MEI’s learning platform, Integral.
You will also have one year of access to course-specific resources online via MEI’s learning platform, Integral.
The course will run once in the Autumn term, twice in the Spring and once in the Summer term.
Please ensure you are able to attend at least 75% of your chosen scheduled sessions before applying.

I found all sessions engaging. The level of challenge was brilliant.
I especially liked some of the hooks that can be used to get students into and thinking about the topics.

The DfE provides funding so that places on this course are free to teachers from state-funded schools and colleges in England. For those who do not meet this criterion, the course fee of £215 will apply.
Priority will be given to teachers in state-funded schools and colleges in England. Where we have spare capacity, we extend our support to other teachers and operate a waiting list.
Teachers who are new to offering the Mechanics element of the AS and A level Mathematics course, and those who are seeking to refresh their approach in this context.
Please note: this is not suitable for those wishing to study the content in order to gain an A level qualification.
Yes. Trainee teachers are eligible to join all Subject Knowledge Live courses, however the standard course fee will apply. If you have secured a role in a state-funded school or college in England, or are currently undertaking a placement in one, and the school is willing to be named on your application, you will be eligible to attend free of charge.
This course covers a selection of the topics from each of the major specifications, but should not be considered comprehensive.
This course will take a peer-to-peer approach: we will be delivering subject knowledge whilst modelling recommended pedagogies. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on the practices demonstrated as well as their own teaching approaches to the content. If you require even greater focus on pedagogy, we recommend our extended professional development programmes.
