COURSE OVERVIEW
Introducing students to how maths and statistics power machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), and build practical data science skills.
Designed for students interested in AI, data science and real-world problem-solving, the course combines mathematical ideas with hands-on Python coding using accessible, free web-based tools.
Across the course, students will learn how to prepare and explore data, create visualisations, build simple models from real datasets, and understand how AI systems work in practice. They will also consider important issues such as bias and ethics in AI, while developing skills that support future study and careers in areas such as mathematics, computing, data science and related fields.
This course has been created to support students who are not studying A level Mathematics but are studying similar subjects like Core Maths, A level Computer Science or A level Statistics.
At the end of the course, students will have an assessment through a 1-hour written exam and a practical task using a Python notebook to build models from data.
11 online sessions
The eleven online sessions will be held via Zoom. The technology tasks will use free web-based platforms such as Kaggle or Google Colab.
Please note: Places are strictly limited to a maximum of 15 students from a school/college. Teachers need to register their students for this course; we will not accept applications directly from students.

The DfE provides funding so that places on this course are free to students from state-funded schools and colleges in England. Other students are not accepted into this course.
Places on this course are limited. Early applications are encouraged. Over-subscribed courses will operate a waiting list.

Years 12–13 who are interested in data science or how maths is used in machine learning and AI, but are not studying A level Mathematics or Further Mathematics. This course is particularly appropriate for students who are studying Core Maths, A level Computer Science or A level Statistics.
