COURSE OVERVIEW
Introducing A level Mathematics students to the maths and statistics behind machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI).
Our Maths into AI course while help students build practical experience through hands-on coding in Python.
Across 11 sessions, students will explore how data science techniques are used to analyse real-world problems and build models from data. Working with datasets from areas such as the environment, sport, commerce and demographics. They will use the datasets to develop their understanding of data preparation, exploratory data analysis, visualisation, machine learning, and the principles behind AI.
The course is designed to deepen students’ mathematical and statistical understanding of these rapidly developing fields, while also supporting future study and career pathways by developing practical skills in modelling with real data. Students will also consider important issues around bias and ethics in AI.
At the end of the course, students will have an assessment through a 1-hour written exam and a practical task using a Python notebook to build models from data.
11 online sessions
The eleven online sessions will be held via Zoom. The technology tasks will use free web-based platforms such as Kaggle or Google Colab.
Please note: Places are strictly limited to a maximum of 15 students from a school/college. Teachers need to register their students for this course; we will not accept applications directly from students.

What you will learn
Students will gain a practical introduction to the mathematical ideas, statistical techniques and coding skills that underpin data science, machine learning and AI.
Work with Real Data
Students will learn how to prepare data, carry out exploratory data analysis, and create visualisations to identify patterns and support modelling.
Build Machine Learning Models
Develop an understanding of how models can be built from data, and gain experience using Python to apply machine learning techniques in practice.
Understand AI and its Implications
Explore how artificial intelligence works, alongside key ideas around bias, fairness and the ethical use of AI.
This was a course I really enjoyed. I was able to develop my analysis skills overall and I can now analyse data professionally. This also aided my learning of statistics in maths A-level. Thank you so much for the opportunity!
The feedback from our students was very positive. All said they would recommend it to next year’s cohort and felt it met the objectives. They are grateful for the opportunity.
