Core Maths in the West Midlands

The first Core Maths Conference took place in Birmingham city centre on Monday 14th October with over 30 teachers, new and experienced to Core Maths, aiming to develop their practice. A keynote talk from Rob Eastaway on clever ways to (roughly) calculate anything, taking ideas from his recent book “Maths on the Back of an Envelope”, inspired ideas for teaching Fermi estimation. This was supplemented with workshops on Starting up Core Maths, Working with world data and Using technology in the classroom.

The next Birmingham Core Maths Conference will take place on 31st January 2020 when, along with a number of other sessions, a representative for the universities’ Q-Step programme with be giving a keynote talk.

The GLOW Maths Hub is running a Supporting Core Maths Work Group, in collaboration with the AMSP, in Worcester. This CPD comprises four sessions and focuses on resourcing, collaborative discussion and planning, assessment and trialling ideas between sessions. Registrations are open and sessions begin on 26th November.
