We are excited to announce our brand new online sustained course that has been designed for those new to teaching AS/A level Mathematics, Preparing to teach A level Mathematics. The course will be delivered over six months, and aims to support teachers to develop their teaching skills by exploring the underlying principles of effective A level Mathematics teaching.

Preparing to teach A level Mathematics has a focus on pedagogical themes such as effective questioning, making connections between topics, and the use of technology. These will be explored in the context of key topics from the pure maths content of AS/A level Mathematics.

The course consists of:

  • ten fully interactive online sessions focused on developing effective pedagogy
  • in-depth reflection on your practice, achieved over a sustained six month period
  • textbooks to support your studies
  • access to online teaching and learning resources
  • a course leader who is available for support throughout.

As well as those new to teaching AS/A level Mathematics, the course would benefit GCSE Mathematics teachers who aspire to move to A level in the future. Those with some experience of A level Mathematics will benefit from the focus on pedagogy.

Preparing to teach A level Mathematics will begin in October, and the online sessions will take place roughly once a fortnight during term time until April. You can view more information and apply on the AMSP website.

This course is free of charge for teachers working in state-funded schools and colleges in England. For others the course fee is £300. State-funded schools and colleges located within Priority Areas are eligible to receive a subsidy of £500 to participate in this course.
