Our ‘New to teaching A level Mathematics summer school’ is back!

Thursday 12th May 2022

In August, the AMSP’s acclaimed annual New to teaching A level Mathematics summer school will return.

Run in conjunction with the National STEM Learning CentreOpens a new window, the New to teaching A level Mathematics summer school is ideal for teachers who are comfortable with the mathematical content of the first year of A level Mathematics but have little, or no, experience of teaching A level Mathematics. The course is also suitable for those who are new to teaching A level Mathematics, i.e. have no more than three years’ experience of teaching the subject. If you’re a Head of Maths, our summer school would be ideal for any new teachers that will be joining your department to teach A level from September 2022.

In York, over four days in August, we’ll introduce a range of strategies that you can use to teach A level Mathematics, including building upon previous learning, student-centred use of technology, and using real data in statistics. We’ll aim to develop your pedagogical knowledge to improve your teaching skills, giving you the confidence to teach for your students’ understanding and engagement, rather than ‘teaching to the test’.

We’ve received some fantastic feedback from teachers who have attended our New to teaching A level Mathematics summer school in previous years, including:

  • All sessions were incredibly valuable, and extremely well organised. I now feel much more confident in teaching A level, but will also take away strategies that will have a huge impact on my teaching throughout the school.
  • It was excellent. I especially liked the focus on pedagogy rather than subject knowledge.
