In December, the Education and Skills Funding Agency published details about 16-19 funding for academic year 2022 to 2023, following on from the Chancellor’s three-year spending review announcement in October.

There is excellent news for schools and colleges about continued funding to support the teaching of Core Maths, AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

The Advanced Maths Premium will continue to be funded in academic year 2022-23, to encourage increased participation in Core Maths, AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. The premium will remain at £600 per additional student (above a baseline value). For academic year 2021-22, over £16 million in additional funding was paid to 966 providers, the amount ranging from £600 to £345,000. This equates to over 27,000 additional students studying level 3 maths in 2020-21, compared to 2015-16 and 2016-17.

The High Value Courses Premium will also continue to be funded in academic year 2022-23 to further encourage the study of courses leading to higher wage returns. The qualifying qualifications include A level Mathematics, A level Further Mathematics and A level Statistics. Students enrolled on at least 2 of the listed A level courses are eligible for the premium. For academic year 2022-23, the HVCP is increasing from £400 to £600 per student for each year the student is on their study programme. In 2021-22, over £84 million in additional funding was paid to 2,153 providers, an average of £39,000 per provider.

The AMSP website has further information about funding available to schools and colleges to support and increase participation in Core Maths, AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. This includes details of the Large Programme Uplift which provides additional funding for students who are studying 4 or more A level subjects, or other large level 3 programmes, such as T levels and TechBacc. It is particularly helpful for students wishing to study A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, as Further Mathematics is commonly studied as part of a four A level programme. There have been no changes to this funding announced by the ESFA.
