COURSE OVERVIEW

Develop students’ mathematical reasoning and deepen understanding across the Higher Tier GCSE Mathematics curriculum through this collaborative, expert-led conference.

This one-day event is designed for teachers who are currently teaching Higher Tier GCSE Mathematics, or who are preparing to teach it in the near future, including Heads of Mathematics and Key Stage 4 Leaders.

The in-person conference focuses on mathematical reasoning, curriculum coherence, and progression to post-16 study.

Through four linked sessions centred on a common mathematical theme, participants will explore approaches to developing mathematical thinking, using technology to support classroom discussion, and designing coherent learning experiences.

Teachers will leave with practical strategies and greater confidence in supporting students to reason, make connections, and progress beyond GCSE.

1 day in-person conference

The conference will be held twice in the academic year, in varying locations, during the Summer and Spring terms. You will find the dates for the next conference on the downloadable Conference Schedule below.

What you will learn

Gain a deeper understanding of how mathematical reasoning can be embedded in Higher Tier GCSE Mathematics, and how curriculum coherence supports progression and conceptual understanding.

Deepen subject knowledge

Strengthen your understanding of how mathematical reasoning develops across the Higher Tier GCSE curriculum.

Build confidence and expertise

Build confidence in supporting mathematical reasoning in Higher Tier GCSE Mathematics through shared practice and peer discussion.

Apply effective teaching strategies

Explore ways in which technology can facilitate classroom discussion and develop mathematical connections.

I feel I’ve learned more about coherence in the curriculum and how one subject can actually be extended right from KS3 to GCSE or above.

Gave good ideas of how to present problems to pupils and get them thinking more deeply

Useful topics and resources that can be applied immediately, as well as starting discussions within the department.

The DfE provides funding so that places on this course are free to teachers from state-funded schools and colleges in England; other teachers are not accepted on this course.

Places on this course are limited, so early applications are encouraged. Over-subscribed courses will operate a waiting list.

This conference is suitable for those currently teaching Higher Tier GCSE Mathematics, or who expect to do so in the near future.

The theme of the conference is the same each instance throughout the year, but the content changes each new academic year, with new sessions focusing on different topics or aspects of the problem-solving process. We therefore welcome both new and returning teachers.
