Lincolnshire (including N and NE Lincs) Teacher Network
The Art Of Teaching Proof In A Level MathsOverview
The Lincolnshire (including N and NE Lincs) Teacher Network is an AMSP funded project, allowing teachers of KS4 and KS5 Mathematics to meet, collaborate and share best practice. We meet 4 times a year. The programme is mainly delegate-led - the focus of each meeting is decided by the demand from teachers that attend. Teachers will be able to share ideas, resources, strategies and plans, as well as being updated on the AMSP support currently available.
Content
This online twilight course for teachers of AS and A Level Mathematics, provides an opportunity to consider how the new 'overarching theme' of proof can be delivered together with aspects of the curriculum content from pure mathematics.
Examiners' reports on the new AS and A Level Mathematics from June 2019 to October 2021, from all specifications, agree that the most significant challenge was the new assessment objectives, which led to changes in the demands placed upon students. ResultsPlus data outlined that the ‘Proof’ questions were poorly attempted for all the above examination series, despite some revisions to the style of questions in the latter examinations.
Aims
- To consider how the overarching theme of proof can be addressed within the Specification content, including the compulsory ‘Proof by Contradiction’ for A-Level.
- To look in detail at some recent exam questions and try to see why they were demanding for many students.
- To look at some exemplar questions and have an opportunity to try them.
- To share some useful resources to support effective delivery of ‘Proof’ in the classroom.
Who Will Benefit From Attending?
All teachers of A Level Mathematics who would like to develop their teaching to address the new assessment objectives in A Level Mathematics, and support students to achieve more confidence in tackling these types of proof questions. Delegates are asked to have a pen/pencil handy to the session as they will be trying some proof questions.
Delegates will get a copy of the Presentation and access to Google Drive link containing all the resources referred to during the session and a lot more!
