Visualising Data with the Desmos Graphing Calculator

Students taking A level Maths and Further Maths are required to

• use technology to explore a data set
• interpret real data
• use data to investigate questions arising in real contexts
These are skills which all students should be prepared for whether they are studying maths post 16 or not.
The Desmos graphing calculator allows data to be analysed and visualised quickly and simply. In this session we will investigate how the use of this web based technology can support students learning and understanding of data analysis and visualisation.

  • Use the Desmos graphing calculator to obtain summary statistics
  • Use the Demos graphing calculator to produce visualisation of data sets

Who will benefit from attending?

This short PD session will be of benefit to all teachers who wish to develop their students understanding and ability to analyse data

We will use real data sets, including the large data sets from A level exam boards, to analyse and interpret data using commands in the Desmos graphing calculator. There will be a focus on producing summary statistics and diagrams for single and bivariate data. We will look at changing elements of the data set to consider the effects this will have on the data.

Materials and Equipment

It is advisable to bring along a laptop to work with in the session.

All data will be supplied before the event.

Any teacher working in a school or college in the UK can apply for this course. However, due to the way we are funded, priority will be given to teachers in state-funded schools and colleges in England. Applications from those teaching GCSE or A level Mathematics in other institutions will be confirmed if there is capacity. This course is only open to teachers working in schools or colleges in the UK.
