Kent and Medway Summer Maths Conference - Should my School Consider Offering Core Maths?

Online

Overview

The Kent and Medway Maths Conference is an annual event where the AMSP and the Kent and Medway Maths Hub come together to provide outstanding professional development opportunities for teachers of maths in Kent and Medway. The conference is taking place online this year and is running as a series of twilight workshops (16.15 to 17.45) from Monday 11th July 2022 until Thursday 14th July 2022.

A large number of students, with good grades at GCSE, do not continue with the study of maths after the age of 16 - this, despite the fact that many of the courses they choose to study have significant quantitative components. Core Maths has been designed to be of benefit to these students in their level 3 studies, when they enter university or the world of work and in becoming numerate citizens.

Join us to discover what Core Maths is and what it can add to your post-16 offer.

Aims

  • To clarify what Core Maths is - and what it is not.
  • To consider whether offering Core Maths will enhance your post-16 offer.
  • To discuss different approaches to delivering Core Maths.

Who will benefit from attending?

Teachers at schools not yet offering Core Maths who would like to find out more about the qualification and consider whether offering the qualification would be beneficial to their students.

Content

Core Maths is a relatively new level 3 qualification - it was first examined in 2016 - and is designed to be accessible to all students with a grade 4 and above at GCSE. The ideal is that all students with at least a standard pass at GCSE, and who have chosen not to study A level maths, should study Core Maths as part of their post-16 education.

Join us in this workshop to findd out what Core Maths is, how it can add value to your post-16 offer and to discuss different models of delivering the course.
