Year 12 Problem Solving Conference

This conference will be of interest to year 12 A level maths students and their teachers who are looking to explore mathematical problem-solving more deeply. It is intended to be particularly suitable for students who are not taking further maths, but may be interested in degree studies in STEM subjects. It will include information about admission tests which have some mathematical content. Teachers can attend with up to fifteen students and will have the opportunity to work on problems with their students and attend separate CPD sessions for problem-solving. It is possible for students to attend unaccompanied by a teacher.

Basic refreshments will be provided for everyone during breaks in the programme, but students should bring their own packed lunch with them (which should not include any products containing peanuts). There will be a buffet lunch available for teachers.

  • To allow students to discuss and try out problem solving strategies, to think about different ways of looking at example problems and how to approach writing solutions.
  • To allow students and teachers to hear about the mathematical content in some degrees courses in maths, physics, engineering, computer science.
  • To provide teachers with information about university admissions tests that require mathematical problem solving skills.

Who will benefit from attending?

Students who wish to develop their problem solving for use in A level maths questions and for future degree studies in a range of subjects.

Teachers with an interest in supporting students in their own development and in preparations for a range of university admissions tests which have some mathematical content.

Students and teachers from state funded schools can attend free of charge. Each school can have up to 15 students attending.
