NE Summer Maths Teaching Conference



This one day conference, organised jointly by the AMSP and the North East Maths Hubs (Archimedes and Great North), has a focus on Maths across key stages. There will be several sessions throughout the day and we ask that teachers indicate their preference for 4 of the sessions. To help with this we will send you a form after you have applied so you can provide your preferences regarding sessions and any dietary and access requirements. Refreshments will be provided.

Who will benefit from attending?

All teachers of Post 16 Mathematics and teachers of GCSE Mathematics. In addition educators, STEM ambassadors, exam boards, Careers advisors are welcome to attend and please let us know if you would like a stall.


Session 1: A Level Pedagogy

Sam Waterfield and Tim Johnson are leading a 1 hour session on effective A Level Maths pedagogy to support Covid recovery and beyond. The session is suited to new and experienced teachers of A Level Maths. This is in promotion of next year’s Developing A Level Pedagogy Work Group run by Archimedes NE Maths Hub and Great North Maths Hub - more details here:  You do not have to commit to a Work Group to attend this session. 


  • To explore a range of effective pedagogical approaches within A-level Maths. 
  • To consider areas for collaborative development within the Developing A Level Pedagogy Work Group.

Session 2: A Beginner's Guide to Algebra Tiles

In this 1 hour session led by Richard Morley from St John's School and Sixth Form College, we will be discussing how physical manipulatives can be used to support KS3/4 students to fully grasp the concepts of algebraic manipulation, from collecting like terms to completing the square and everything in between.  The session will allow teachers to see the benefits of manipulatives with students of all abilities.

In this hands-on session, participants will experience the use of manipulatives from a student perspective and discuss how they can be implemented in your own teaching.


  • To experience the range of uses for algebra tiles with the full range of student abilities
  • To help to improve confidence in planning and leading lessons that utilise manipulatives

Session 3: Further Maths

"Linking Together Further Maths"

In this session led by Michael Gibson, Area Coordinator for the Advanced Maths Support Programme, we will explore the deep links between several topics in Further Maths including matrices, complex numbers, polar graphs, differential equations and Maclaurin series. We will look at how technology can be used to aid the understanding of such links and work together on problems that emphasise and utilise these links.


  • To demonstrate connections between topics in Further Maths
  • To use technology effectively in the classroom

Session 4: GCSE Mathematical Thinking

This session is led by David Main from Park View who also runs the Work Group Mathematical Thinking for GCSE. The Mathematical Thinking for GCSE project is for secondary maths teachers looking for practical and theoretical elements to address their students’ GCSE attainment. 

This is for teachers of KS4 who want to further develop their pedagogical and theoretical understanding of developing mathematical thinking, using practical classroom strategies to explore these ideas.


  • To increase experience and understanding of the role of reasoning and problem-solving in the curriculum
  • To help to improve confidence in planning and leading lessons that support deep mathematical thinking 

Session 5: Core Maths

Do you know how to create a genuine context for applying maths in the real world?

Do your students have the quantitative skills they need for the world of work?

Do you know what mathematical skills are needed in careers outside of STEM?

In this 1 hour session led by Eleanor Baggaley and Valerija Peles-Edwards, we will provide a rationale for the Core Maths qualification and how it equips students with the work-life skills they need for a successful future. You will experience materials from a student perspective and discuss ideas to incorporate into your teaching. We will showcase further resources, all of which you can use immediately in school from KS3. 


  • To provide context to mathematical problems that can be used effectively in teaching.
  • To investigate the myriad of wonderful resources that are available and which are suitable for the GCSE classroom as well as Core Maths

Session 6: GCSE to level 3 transition 

In this session led by Jeremy Dawson and Glyn Evans we will be discussing how best to help students make the transition from GCSE to Level 3 Maths. There will be a chance to investigate the free resources available from AMSP and also to look at student courses that are available for free, which students can apply for themselves.

In addition we will be demonstrating some taster lessons that you can use with your students to help ensure that the course is right for them.

Jeremy will also be looking at the application of ratio in the level 3 maths classroom.


  • To provide teachers with a range of transition resources that they can try out in the classroom or direct their students to.
  • To investigate ratio in the level 3 classroom

Session 7: Advanced Level Problem Solving and University Admissions Tests

Problem solving is a central theme of A-Level Maths and Further Maths. Many students are also required to sit university admissions tests such as STEP, MAT and TMUA, which involve problem solving at an even higher level. We will explore ways in which students can be supported to become more confident problem solvers as well as showcasing some of the additional support that can be offered by the AMSP.


  • To help to develop confidence in your students' problem solving skills
  • To explore resources and support available to you through AMSP

Session 8: Use of technology in the Level 3 classroom

Sarah Denison is leading a 1 hour session on using Desmos effectively in the Level 3 Maths classroom.  Teachers will experience the range of features of Desmos and see how to incorporate this powerful tool in A Level and Core Maths lessons.  The session is suited to experienced users of Desmos and complete novices.


  • To provide an insight into how Desmos can be used effectively in the Level 3 Maths classroom.
  • To experience the range of applications in Desmos.

Session 9: Increasing Girls' Participation and Careers

If you want some help with answering the students' question "When will I ever need this?" Then this is the session for you!

Louise Maule and Eleanor Baggaley are leading a 1 hour session to identify and discuss strategies to support and encourage more girls to consider studying maths beyond GCSE. In particular the session will explore classroom activities that link careers and curriculum, to broaden learners' perceptions of STEM-related careers and the value of maths to their future.


You will leave this session knowing how easy and effective it is to link careers with the maths curriculum and confident that you now have the tools to make those connections for your students.
