The Yorkshire Teacher Network
Careers and the Maths Curriculum (Gatsby Benchmarks)Overview
The Yorkshire Teacher Network is an AMSP-funded project, allowing teachers of maths to meet, collaborate and to share best practice. We meet termly and the programme is mainly speaker-led training events and may include informal sessions.
Content
Whilst a level 3 mathematics qualification is commonly considered to be a useful addition to a student's career prospects, the possible pathways and opportunites that exist for students with a mathematical background are not always widely known by the teacher of mathematics.
In this network session we will:
- Learn why linking careers to the curriculum is important for maths teachers
- Showcase practical examples of the use of maths in different careers
- Explore strategies and recommended resources to help you promote post-16 maths pathways
- Discover how the AMSP can support you (and your school) meet the Gatsby benchmarks
This session will be useful for all teachers of secondary mathematics. We would love to hear from you about the work you have done in your departments and schools with regard to linking careers with maths.
I am delighted that this network meeting will be led by the AMSP's careers lead, Rachel Beddoes. Rachel is the Girls' Participation and Careers Coordinator for the AMSP having previously taught mathematics for 20+ years. She was also a STEM Coordinator, working with businesses to convince students of the utility of maths through its various applications and the different careers that studying STEM subjects could possibly lead to.
Materials and Equipment
The session will be online and will take place on Zoom. We aim to emulate as much of the ‘face-to-face’ experience as possible and would like participants to be proactive in communicating during sessions. Please come armed with a working microphone. We also strongly encourage you to attend with a web-cam.
You will be sent a Zoom link to access the workshop on the day of the session.
