STEP Preparation and Mathematical Problem Solving

Overview

From January to May 2022 we are offering an exciting programme of support in the North East for students in years 12 and 13 who are either preparing for the STEP Mathematics exams in June or who wish to develop their general mathematical problem solving skills.

In a similar model to our MAT/TMUA course last term, we will be running a face-to-face course at the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle on Wednesday evenings from 4:15-5:45, beginning on 26th January. Here you will have the choice of joining one of two groups:

  • STEP Preparation - mostly aimed at Year 13s, this group will work with Michael Gibson on questions from the STEP Mathematics papers. These are undoubtedly the most challenging questions that school age mathematicians are ever expected to attempt in formal examinations so, for students sitting the exams, extensive preparation is essential. They can also very rewarding questions to complete, often teaching you fascinating things about maths, and so are also a worthwhile pursuit for any student who is ready to access them, even if not sitting the actual exams this summer.
  • General Problem Solving - mostly aimed at Year 12s, this group will work with Sarah Sharp on a range of interesting and challenging mathematical problems. One of the aims of this group is to develop students' problem solving skills so that they are better prepared to start working on MAT/TMUA/STEP questions in the following year. Is is also a worthwhile activity for any student who enjoys maths, particularly if considering studying maths or similar subjects at university.

We realise that not all students will be able to attend face-to-face STEP sessions in Newcastle due to travel difficulties or other reasons. So this year we will be trialling a parallel online course to the above, with Sam James working with students on the same set of STEP questions, but in an online format. These sessions will take place on Thursday evenings from 5:00-6:30, starting on 27th January.

For students, particulalrly year 12s, who may not yet be ready to access STEP questions, we will also be offering another online general problem solving course, starting on Tuesday 1st March. This will be delivered by Adam Townsend and involves completely different problems from those that were met in our previous online course last term. It is also completely different from what is being offered to the General Problem Solving group at the RGS so students are welcome to attend this course along with any other course if they wish.
