London North East Teacher Network
Essential Toys for the Mechanics ClassroomOverview
Teacher Network is an AMSP-funded project, allowing teachers of A level Mathematics to meet, collaborate and to share best practice. We meet termly. The sessions are split between trainer-led workshops (on a topic determined by staff preferences at previous meetings), teacher led presentations and a 'feedforward' discussion which informs planning for the impending term/year.
Content
The primary focus of this Teacher Network Meeting is to make the case for demonstration 'toys' in the Mechanics classroom, to showcase the best of these, and to empower teachers to use them in their everyday practice.
The case for 'toys in the mechanics classroom' will look at their importance for able students (in equipping them for 'complex narrative' problems), for weak students (as a tool for modelling) and for teachers (in offering a non-algorithmic approach to this aspect of the course).
The showcase will involve a number of affordable 'toys', with interactive opportunities to consider them as teaching tools. Simple demonstrations and activities will be offered for ALL sections of the Single Maths Mechanics course.
There will also be a chance to discuss what enrichment activities and teacher events YOU would like to see taking place locally.
This session will be repeated on Wednesday 2nd February at City and Islington College, Goswell Road, EC1V 7LA : if this time and venue are preferable please go here : https://amsp.org.uk/events/details/9467
