Keele Teacher Network

STEM careers, encouraging young people (in particular young women) into careers in STEM

The Keele Teacher Network is an AMSP-funded project, allowing teachers of GCSE & A level Mathematics to meet, collaborate and share best practice, and hear from expert presenters. We meet approximately termly and the programme is mainly speaker-led training events and may include informal sessions.

  • STEM careers and associated resources
  • Sharing experiences, successes and challenges
  • Maths Hub activity

Keele and Telford Online Network meeting.

STEM careers, encouraging young people (in particular young women) into careers in STEM

This meeting gives teachers across Stoke, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Telford the opportunity to have a look at, and experience resources designed to inspire students with maths and careers it can lead to.

In the session we will:

  • Learn why linking careers to the curriculum is important for maths teachers
  • Explore strategies and recommend resources to help you promote post-16 maths pathways
  • Discover how the AMSP can support you (and your school) to meet the Gatsby benchmarks

In this session we will be joined by Rachel Beddoes. Rachel is the Girl's Participation and Careers Coordinator for the AMSP having previously taught mathematics for 20+ years. She was also a STEM Coordinator, working with businesses to convince students of the utility of maths through its various applications and the different careers that studying STEM subjects could possibly lead to.

This session will be useful for all teachers of secondary mathematics. We would love to hear from you about the work you have done in your departments and schools with regard to linking careers and maths.

As this will be an interactive session we recommend that to get the most from the discussion you will need a microphone available and a webcam would enable even better communication.

The meeting will give the opportunity for people to share experiences, ideas and successes, and to seek advice from colleagues.
