Space, Sustainable Style & Sums

We’re excited to be hosting a virtual event via Zoom in conjunction with the London Mathematical Society (LMS) and the University of Greenwich. The event aims to encourage KS4 female students to explore the further study of and careers in maths, as well as supporting them with GCSE maths content.

The morning will comprise of three workshops and you are welcome to join for the full session or can dip in and out of workshops as you wish.

Who will benefit from attending?

The focus of this event is Year 10 and 11 female students, but we welcome all to attend.

Session 1: Stats in Style (Takita Bartlett-Lashley)

Use maths and data visualisation as an opportunity to explore and communicate the impact of sustainable fashion trends. Working at the intersection of STEM, fashion and education, Takita specialises in creative applications of maths and technology across fashion and design. Her mathematical clothing/jewellery designs are a unique blend of style with educational purposes that have graced the red carpet and classrooms alike!

Session 2: Studying Maths after GCSE and at University (Jude Mortimer – AMSP & Manisha Dhaliwal - University of Greenwich)

Investigate the advantages of studying maths after GCSE and at university and explore some of the different options available.

Session 3: Space! (Cath Moore and Nicole Cozens - AMSP)

Consider some of the challenges faced with Space travel and their ingenious solutions. 'Space!' will draw on your students' knowledge of geometry and equations of motion (with some algebra), along with their reasoning, problem solving and communication skills.

Materials and Equipment

There will be an opportunity for students to carry out a short experiment which will involve them having paper and scissors to cut the paper. (It is possible to tear the paper, but cutting will allow for more accuracy.)

Other Information

Your school will be sent a link to the event for which you register. This link may be shared with other teachers within your school and with any students who are unable to attend school.

While it is hoped that your students can be supported by mathematics teachers, we have developed resources to support non-specialists if they are facilitating the event. Additionally, we are aware that you may have students who are not in school and the event has been designed to support these students; they will be able to participate fully in the interactive aspects.

The event will be streamed live as a Zoom webinar.

There will be the opportunity for the results of the task that your students complete to be fed back to the event presenters for the plenary sessions - your students will need access to a computer or smart phone to do this (this could be the teacher's computer in a classroom or a set of tablets with internet access). At no point in the session will a student be asked to provide personal information.

All state schools are encouraged to attend.

Students who are unable to attend school can be sent the link for the event by their teacher so that they can join remotely.
