Developing students' Problem Solving skills and raising aspirations by using University Admissions questions.

Yorkshire Coast Teacher Network

University Admissions tests, and the UKMT questions (which have many similarities) are a rich source of problem solving questions, some of which are surprisingly accessible for many students across the Key Stages, and are very useful to challenge students and raise their aspirations.

  • To examine publicly available material to enhance development of students' problem solving skills.
  • To Look at how these materials can be used in a variety of ways within the classroom, and as enrichment.
  • To discuss how using these resources can help overcome disadvantage and raise students' (especially girls') confidence.

Who will benefit from attending?

This event is aimed at all teachers of maths, from KS3 to KS5.  Particularly those who are interested in inspiring students to take maths post 16, or to apply to university, especially those which use the Admissions Tests for any subject.

In this session we look at materials from various University Admissions tests and the UKMT.

We will look at how teachers can make use of these to develop students' problem solving skills and resilience in problem solving.  We will look at their use within the syllabus as well as for enrichment.

We will discuss how introducing students to material from University Admissions Tests early, and in an accessible way can raise students’ confidence and aspirations.

We will also be looking at how important it is for students to gain familiarity in this type of questions to be able to reach their full potential if they go on to take these tests.

This complements the online event on 24th November
