Florence Nightingale Day: Enrichment for Year 11, 12 and 13 Girls

Organised and run with Lancaster University, Florence Nightingale Day is designed for girls and their teachers to listen to female mathematicians and see how women are playing a significant role in current research.

The day will showcase successful women in mathematics and statistics at various stages of their careers and display information about the broad range of possibilities offered by a degree in mathematics or statistics. We aim to stimulate informal discussion between pupils and mathematicians to inspire them into post-16 maths, and participants will also take place in a fiendishly tricky quiz.

If you're interested in attending our event, please contact Dr James Groves from the AMSP ([email protected]), or Prof Nadia Mazza from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Lancaster ([email protected]).

  • Showcase successful women in mathematics, statistics and OR at various stages of their careers;
  • Give participants an insight into the careers of female mathematicians, statisticians and operational researchers;
  • Enrich participants' knowledge of several interesting topics from mathematics, statistics and OR;
  • Encourage participants to work in a team to solve a variety of tricky problems.

Who will benefit from attending?

All girls in Years 11, 12 and 13 who study mathematics, and their teachers, should benefit from attending. Boys are also welcome to attend.

The day will include talks by female mathematicians and statisticians and a tricky team quiz. Participants may attend as many of the talks as they wish (but we hope everyone will have a go at the quiz). The speakers:

  • Dr Raquel Coelho Simoes (Lancaster University)
  • Dr Jenny Wadsworth (Lancaster University)
  • Dr Danielle Bewsher (University of Central Lancashire)

The day will start at 10:00am and conclude at 3:00pm. A full programme is at:

The AMSP, and its predecessor the FMSP, has supported this event, financially and organisationally, since its inaugural outing in 2013.

Feedback from participants has always been excellent - comments from pupils attending in 2018 included 'challenging but satisfying', 'it was good to see practical uses for maths' and 'it gave me a future career idea'.

This event is open to all.
