Preparing your students for maths university admissions interviews

Overview

If you feel that preparing students for university maths interviews is something you or your school needs to strengthen, then this short event will interest you. We shall examine the comments of Cambridge directors of studies of maths on the purpose and procedural elements of interviews. This section will also contain useful pointers for students.

We will practise in small groups some university interview questions, including a longer multi-stage question, so that we can learn how to ask questions which elicit useful responses from students. We will attempt to write our own university admissions questions for use in mock interviews.

We will review some of the available resources.

Aims

  • Participants will understand the purpose and procedure of university maths interviews. They will learn some practical points to pass on to their students.
  • Participants will understand the importance of asking questions to elicit useful responses from students. They will practise some university interview questions to learn how to ask appropriate questions to students.
  • Participants will practise writing their own questions, to give to students in a mock interview.

Who will benefit from attending?

Teachers of A-level Further Maths, and teachers with an interest in or a responsibility for Oxbridge admissions.
