West London Teacher Network

Teaching Second Derivates for Understanding

The West London Teacher Network is an AMSP funded project allowing teachers of maths to meet, to collaborate and to share professional development. Initially meetings will be held online but we hope to be able to hold them face-to-face later in the academic year.

In out first meeting of the year we will be focussing on second derivatives, and try out some resources aimed at developing a higher level understanding of this topic. This session is suitable for new and experienced teachers of A level maths.

  • What problems and misconceptions do students face?
  • Use desmos to investigate the change in the gradient and think about what defines concave, convex and points of inflection.
  • Explore deep thinking questions to develop reasoning and understanding
  • Bring along questions which have posed difficulties for your students.
