North West A level Maths 'Pick n Mix'
12: AS Calculus

The North-West Online A level Maths Pick n Mix is a series of twelve 90-minute PD sessions ideal for any teachers who are planning to teach A level Mathematics for the first time, or who have recently started teaching this course. We will aim to help you feel more confident with the content of the course while also highlighting effective teaching approaches.

There are two very special features about this event:

  • the ‘Pick n Mix’ design allows teachers to dip into as many or as few sessions as they like
  • there will be a strong emphasis throughout the sessions on problem-solving and technology

All sessions are free of charge and access to the resources used in the sessions will be shared after the event.

  • To examine the key concepts in the teaching of A level Mathematics.
  • To discuss a range of approaches to teaching the content effectively and engagingly, with particular reference to problem-solving and technology.
  • To provide access to a wide variety of suitable resources.

Who will benefit from attending?

This series of events is primarily aimed at teachers who have started teaching maths relatively recently. More experienced teachers may like to participate in order to consider alternative teaching approaches and to gather some new resources to enhance their teaching.

In this session, we will develop a greater understanding of the AS calculus content. Topics will include an introduction to differentiation, max min points (inc 2nd derivative), first principles, indefinite integration and area under a curve.

Note: 'AS' refers to content typically taught in the first year of a two-year course.

Materials and Equipment

Sessions will be hosted on Zoom or BBB (using Chrome / Firefox). The session leader will contact you in advance to explain how to access the session and to list any additional equipment / software that may be required.

Priority will be given to schools and colleges in DfE priority areas. Each school/college may send up to two teachers; if you would like to send more then please get in touch with your Area Coordinator.
