Maths for teachers of A Level Psychology
This event is being run in partnership with the Association for the Teaching of Psychology, as part of the ‘Maths in Psychology’ project, with support from the Department for Education.
These free, online sessions are for psychology teachers who wish to build their confidence in teaching the mathematical content of A Level Psychology. The six sessions will look at a range of content from core mathematical skills such as standard form and percentages to statistical testing. During the sessions we will model approaches to teaching these topics and share ideas on how to engage your students in meaningful discussions about data in psychology.
The final session will be joint with other subjects, demonstrating the power of using the free software Desmos in teaching and the links between the Level 3 Core Maths course and other subjects.
- Develop confidence in teaching the mathematical elements of Psychology
- Understand how studying Core Maths will support students with the mathematical components of Psychology
- Network and share ideas with fellow teachers
Who will benefit from attending?
These sessions are aimed at teachers of psychology who would like to increase their confidence in teaching the mathematical content of psychology.
In the first session, no prior knowledge or experience will be assumed. Subsequent sessions may rely on mathematical knowledge covered in prior sessions.
Materials and Equipment
We aim to emulate as much of the ‘face-to-face’ experience as possible and give delegates opportunities to discuss ideas with each other in breakout rooms. Participants should expect to be proactive in communicating during sessions, so we strongly encourage the use of microphones and webcams.
These events will be run in Zoom. Teachers who sign up will be emailed in the days prior to the sessions and again on the day of each session with a link to register for the meeting in order to receive a link to the Zoom room.
Due to the way we are funded, priority will be given to teachers from state-funded schools and colleges in England and trainee Psychology teachers. Teachers from other institutions are very welcome to apply and will be accepted if we have capacity.
The course will be free to attend.
