Maths for teachers of A Level Geography
Overview
This event is part of the Geography and Core Maths Initiative, which is being run in conjunction with the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) For further information and resources see www.rgs.org/geomaths.
These free, online sessions are for geography teachers who wish to build their confidence in teaching the mathematical content of A Level Geography. The seven sessions will look at a range of statistical content. During the sessions we will model approaches to teaching mathematical content and share ideas on how to engage students in meaningful discussions about data in geography.
The course will include a joint session with other subjects, demonstrating the power of using the free software Desmos in teaching and the links between the Level 3 Core Maths course and other subjects.
Aims
- Develop confidence in teaching the mathematical elements of geography
- Understand how studying Core Maths will support with the mathematical components of geography
- Network and share ideas with other teachers
Who will benefit from attending?
These sessions are aimed at teachers of geography who would like to increase their confidence in teaching the mathematical content of the subject.
In the first session, no prior knowledge or experience will be assumed. Subsequent sessions may build on mathematical knowledge covered in prior sessions so it will be helpful, but not essential, for you to attend the entire series.
Materials and Equipment
We aim to emulate as much of the ‘face-to-face’ experience as possible and give delegates opportunities to discuss ideas with each other in breakout rooms. Participants should expect to be proactive in communicating during sessions, so we strongly encourage the use of microphones and webcams.
Other Information
These events will be run in Zoom. Teachers who sign up will be emailed in the days prior to the sessions and again on the day of each session with a link to register for the meeting in order to receive a link to the Zoom room.
Eligibility
Due to the way we are funded, priority will be given to teachers from state-funded schools and colleges in England and trainee geography teachers. Teachers from other institutions are very welcome to apply and will be accepted if we have capacity.
Cost
The course will be free to attend.
