Getting Started with Hyperbolic Functions

In this session we shall look at some approaches and context to introducing and teaching hyperbolic functions. We shall also look at common student misconceptions and errors and disect exam questions from across different exam boards.

  • To provide context and motivation for the study of hyperbolic functions
  • To investigate some approaches to the teaching of hyperbolic functions
  • To discuss common student misconceptions and difficulties with hyperbolic functions
  • To look at recent exam questions and examiner reports on hyperbolic functions

Who will benefit from attending?

Any teacher of Pure content of Further Mathematics should benefit from this session. It is not necessary to have taught hyperbolic functions in the past; the session is designed to benefit teachers who have not taught it before (and have little knowldege of the topic) but also provide potentially useful information and thoughts for those experienced in the topic.

Materials and Equipment

The AMSP uses BigBlueButton (BBB), which is an online conferencing system that allows participants to collaborate in real time. It is easy to use and has features which enable a tutor and participants to communicate live on-line by using audio, video, instant messaging and, if needed, writing on a shared virtual whiteboard.

The session will be remote and will take place on the BigBlueButton platform, as such you will need a laptop/desktop computer or other internet enabled device.

We will set up the classroom and send you the classroom link, via e-mail, shortly before the session is due to start.

BBB is designed to be used on a variety of platforms but you will get the best experience via a desktop or laptop computer, running either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as the browser. Note: Internet Explorer and Edge are not suitable currently.

It is advised that you check the requirements to access the online classroom in advance of the live session that you will be attending. You can do this at any time.

You will need a microphone and headphones/speakers to take engage fully.

Teachers from state-funded schools and academies. Applications from independent schools will be accepted and places will only be granted if there is availability.
