Teaching GCSE Trig Graphs, Transformations and Tangents



This session will focus on the additional topics added to GCSE in 2017.


  • Consider ways of developing a deeper understanding of Functions and graphs in higher GCSE
  • Become familiar with a range of free resources and develop strategies to teach this content
  • Consider how best to prepare students for the Higher Tier GCSE questions related to these topics
  • How the topic develops at A level to help students with transition

Who will benefit from attending?

New teachers of Higher GCSE Maths and others who wish to develop their teaching of these topics


The session will consider the following topics:

Trigonometric Graphs - generating and making connections

Transformations - considering Quadratics

Circles and Tangents

  • Using Pythagoras' Theorem
  • Using students' knowledge of Coordinate Geometry
  • Making connections
  • Where does this go at A level?

We will also look through a few past exam questions for these topics



Materials and Equipment

This meeting will be held on Zoom, which is an online conferencing system that allows participants to collaborate in real time. An invitation will be sent to you a few days before the event. Please do not share this link with anyone else.

You are advised to use a headset or headphones with an inline microphone to provide the best sound quality and to prevent audio issues for other users. A laptop with a built-in webcam and microphone may be sufficient if you’re in a quiet area but please take the time to check this before the session.

Discussion will be both via audio and chat boxes. Please join with a microphone if possible. Joining with your camera on would be most welcome but, of course, not compulsory.
