Effective use of calculators in A level maths
This online event consists of two 90 minute sessions exploring smart ways of using calculators to build understanding, to solve problems efficiently and to check algebraic working. The focus is on the pedagogy of teaching A level topics using the technology rather than on how to use a calculator. Both sessions will feature Casio calculators and emulators, but the principles of effective use are transferable to other brands.
The first online session (Wed July 7) will focus on the use of scientific calculators with some reference to graphic calculators, and be in the context of algebra, sequences, quadratics and polynomials. This session will offer an introduction to using calculators at A level and encourage the nervous and technophobe to gain confidence.
The second online session (Tue Oct 5) will be in the context of coordinate geometry, calculus and statistics at A level, and will be more advanced than the first session. Participants will gain more from this session if they have been able to try out the ideas and strategies from the first session.
It is not essential to join both sessions, but participants will gain more from attending both.
- To explore some lesser known calculator functionality
- To look at ways the efficient use of calculators can build understanding
- To develop a range of checking strategies to improve students' work
- To suggest ways in which creative use of calculators opens some alternative approaches to problem solving
Who will benefit from attending?
Teachers of AS and A level Maths
Teachers of Higher tier GCSE
Contexts for July 7: Algebra, sequences, quadratics and polynomials
Contexts for October 5: Coordinate geometry, calculus and statistics
Materials and Equipment
Both sessions will be delivered online, so you will need access to suitable equipment. You are advised to use a headset or headphones with an inline microphone to provide the best sound quality and to prevent audio issues for other users. A laptop with a built-in webcam and microphone may be sufficient if you are in a quiet area but please take the time to check this before the session.
Access to a suitable calculator or emulator will be helpful, such as the Casio fx991 Classwizz or Casio CG50 graphical calculator.
