Further Maths PD Taster - Introduction to Matrices

Overview

This will be a short introduction to the topic of matrices and is aimed primarily at teachers who are realtively new to the topic. We will go from the basic indeas around transforming points in 2D space, explore the idea of inverse and look in detail at the algrbraic and geometric meaning of matrix multiplication. We will make use of dynamic graphical technology as a way of visualising and demystifying some of the key concepts. There will also be regular opportunities for group discussion around how we would introduce the topic to students.

Aims

  • Get to grips with the basics of matrices, with a focus on their application to geometric transformations in the 2D plane.
  • Explore ways in which dynamic graphical technology can add a unique aspect to the teaching of matrices.
  • Discuss approaches to the introduction of the topic to students.

Who will benefit from attending?

Teachers who are either completely new to teaching matrices or are relatively inexperienced. More experiences teachers are also welcome, particularly if they want to learn more about how technology can assist in the teaching of the topic.

Materials and Equipment

The event will take place via Zoom and teachers will be expected to engage actively via and microphone and webcam. If you have Geogebra installed on a laptop/PC that would be ideal, although the web-based version will suffice if needs be.
