Desmos activities: do more with Computation Layer

Overview

Have you used other peoples' Desmos activities and wondered "How did they do that"? Have you used activities but wanted to know how to make the screens even more interactive? This is all possible using the computation layer in Desmos.

Computation layer (CL) is a scripting language that will help you to create better opportunities for meaningful feedback within your activities. In this two-session short course we will:

  • Introduce the basics of this language and demonstrate how easy it is to view and edit existing code.
  • Demonstrate how to use computation layer to create activties that offer students feedback to develops their mathematical thinking.

Aims

  • To introduce the scripting language used in activity builder
  • To demonstrate how to use computation layer to offer students feedback that develops their mathematical thinking

Who will benefit from attending?

This session is ideal for all teachers of GCSE or A level Mathematics who want to develop their skills at creating Desmos activities.

No experience of computation layer is necessary but experience of using the activity builder will be assumed.

The second session will rely on the content from the first session.

Participant feedback

I am now able to use the computation layer to design simple activities. More importantly I also know how to teach myself or get help and ideas for the future.
This was a very well designed course and the logistics around delivery had been well considered. Thank you all. It's been an unbeatable use of my time.
Be easier to say what wasn't useful because I could just have left a blank box. Gold standard for CPD.
