Enjoyment and engagement in a secondary mathematics classroom (unravelling the mystery of a mastery curriculum)
Many children are now taught the principles of mastery in mathematics at primary school level and mathematics teachers around the country are experiencing the positive impact this has had on children’s understanding, revolutionising their engagement with mathematics. Teachers have found that students transitioning to secondary school tend to have a deeper understanding of topics, can represent concepts or skills in multiple ways and can use mathematical language and apply concepts in unfamiliar situation.
However, many secondary teachers of mathematics may be still unsure about the concept of mastery in mathematics and its teaching philosophy and techniques.
In this session we will explore the principles of mastery and challenge some myths and misconceptions around it.
The session is hosted by AMSP but our guests are Rose-Marie Rochester and Vicky Cook, leads from Archimedes Maths Hub, who will deliver the session with the help of secondary mastery specialists who will also lead the discussion and demonstrate mastery style lesson episodes. You will also be given information on how you can get involved further in developing your understanding of mastery in mathematics, should you wish to do so.
