Making Links Between GCSE and A Level Mathematics

Overview

Are your Year 11 Higher students ready for the challenge of A Level Maths?

Could you support their transition by making links to A Level topics in your lessons?

There are many topics which are covered at both GCSE Maths and A Level - e.g. functions, quadratics, transformations of graphs. To support transition to A Level Maths, it is important that students understand how these topics can be built upon.

This session will look at approaches to the teaching of topics at GCSE with a view to how these ideas are expanded upon in A-level mathematics.  It will also look at how we can raise participation in Level 3 Mathematics thorugh our pedagogical approaches in KS4.

Aims

  • To provide ideas and resources which make clear links between topics at GCSE and A Level
  • To consider how we can support students' transition between GCSE and A Level Maths

Who will benefit from attending?

The session will benefit any teacher who would like to develop their teaching of Higher level GCSE Mathematics. It will be particularly beneficial to teachers at 11-16 schools who have not taught the topic at A-level.

Materials and Equipment

The AMSP uses Big Blue Button (BBB), which is an online conferencing system that allows participants to collaborate in real time. It is easy to use and has features which enable a tutor and participants to communicate live on-line by using audio, video, instant messaging and, if needed, writing on a shared virtual whiteboard.

The session will be remote and will take place on the Big Blue Button platform, as such you will need a laptop/desktop computer or other internet enabled device. We will set up the classroom and send you the classroom link, via e-mail, shortly before the session is due to start. BBB is designed to be used on a variety of platforms but you will get the best experience via a desktop or laptop computer, running either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as the browser.

Note: Internet Explorer and Edge are not suitable currently. It is advised that you check the requirements to access the online classroom in advance of the live session that you will be attending. You can do this at any time. You will need a microphone and headphones/speakers to take engage fully.

As part of our safeguarding procedures please note the following: (i) It is important that you log in with the names you used when you registered for the course otherwise you may not be allowed into the room. If you prefer to use a shortened/alternative name, then do let us/your course tutor know via email in advance of the session. (ii) You must not pass on any of the registration or BBB link details to anyone else.
