Functions at GCSE and Beyond
A function in mathematics has a very precise but abstract definition, however at GCSE we only look at very particular cases and circumstances. This can lead to students struggling with the concept of what a function actually is! This session will look at approaches to the teaching of functions at GCSE with a view to how these ideas are expanded upon in A-level mathematics.
Whilst the session will provide ideas and guidance on teaching functions, there will also be opportunities to share your experiences of teaching this topic with other teachers and possibly even any effective methods of your own!
- To provide ideas and guidance on the teaching of functions at GCSE
- To make links with how the topic is expanded upon at A-level
Who will benefit from attending?
Any teacher who would like to develop their teaching of this topic. It will be particularly beneficial to teachers at 11-16 schools who may have never taught the topic at A-level.
Materials and Equipment
The AMSP uses Big Blue Button (BBB), which is an online conferencing system that allows participants to collaborate in real time. It is easy to use and has features which enable a tutor and participants to communicate live on-line by using audio, video, instant messaging and, if needed, writing on a shared virtual whiteboard.
The session will be remote and will take place on the Big Blue Button platform, as such you will need a laptop/desktop computer or other internet enabled device. We will set up the classroom and send you the classroom link, via e-mail, shortly before the session is due to start. BBB is designed to be used on a variety of platforms but you will get the best experience via a desktop or laptop computer, running either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as the browser.
Note: Internet Explorer and Edge are not suitable currently. It is advised that you check the requirements to access the online classroom in advance of the live session that you will be attending. You can do this at any time. You will need a microphone and headphones/speakers to take engage fully.
As part of our safeguarding procedures please note the following: (i) It is important that you log in with the names you used when you registered for the course otherwise you may not be allowed into the room. If you prefer to use a shortened/alternative name, then do let us/your course tutor know via email in advance of the session. (ii) You must not pass on any of the registration or BBB link details to anyone else.
Teachers from state-funded schools and academies. Applications from independent schools will be accepted and places will only be granted if there is availability.
