North West GCSE ONLINE Summer Festival: "Maths by investigation"
The NW Summer GCSE Maths Festival is a series of four 1.5 hour ONLINE professional development sessions on GCSE Maths.
This session will focus on teaching aspects of mathematics through investigation and inquiry.
- To develop the use of investigations to enhance GCSE Mathematics teaching
- To develop strategies to engage learners and enrich their GCSE Mathematics lessons
Who will benefit from attending?
Teachers of KS3 or GCSE Mathematics.
In this session, we will explore why it’s important to include investigations in your repertoire of maths teaching, and how this can be done effectively.
We’ll link this discussion to what we know about inquiry-based learning, motivation, and resilience.
We'll look at different investigative approaches to a few topics, inluding the use of goal-free tasks and open-ended activities.
We’ll have a look at a few of my favourite longer investigations, and think about how they deepen pupils' understanding of the topic.
We’ll also share websites and resources where mathematical investigations can be found.
