Life Beyond GCSE: Raising Participation in Level 3 Maths

Overview

The Kent and Medway Teacher Network is a composite of the 3 teacher networks which normally run in our region and which are expected to return in September 2021. Because it runs in an online classroom, it negates the geographical challenges that we would normally encounter with network meetings and allows itself to be opened up to the whole region. It is an AMSP funded project, allowing teachers of maths to meet, collaborate and to share best practice during this period when our schools are closed to visitors.

In this meeting we will address the following issues:

Which students should we, as teachers, advise to continue with the study of maths beyond GCSE? Do we know which A levels and university courses have quantitative components that demand an understanding of maths beyond the GCSE specification? Do we understand the value that universities and employers place on mathematical and quantitative skills and qualifications?

Relatively few students in the UK continue the study of maths beyond GCSE. This puts them at a major disadvantage in a global economy where mathematical skills and understanding are highly prized. In this workshop we will look at the reasons why we should encourage the majority of students to study maths beyond the age of 16, the barriers that make this vision challenging and the courses that are available to make this vision a reality.

The workshop will be delivered by Paul Glaister who Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Reading.
