Problem Solving for C Grade Students

Online

Overview

Are you concerned that your middle-grade A level students are struggling with the problem solving and modelling aspects of the new specifications? Many teachers have told us this. So we have designed this course in an attempt to meet these needs.

Aims

  • 1. To consider approaches to teaching that will support the mathematical understanding of average A level students
  • 2. To consider strategies for supporting problem solving for average A level students.
  • 3. To identify the key skills needed for students to tackle modelling questions with confidence.

Who will benefit from attending?

All teachers of A level mathematics who are concerned about the progress of middle-attaining students. Although this course is aimed primarily at teachers of A level students, the strategies discussed are universally applicable to any secondary Maths student.

Content

We will look at strategies which could assist average students in progressing towards their predicted A level grades. There is no magic bullet, but we believe these ideas could form the basis of a departmental strategy for addressing the issue.

There are two sessions 1.5 and 1 hour long with a 30 minute break between.

Materials and Equipment

The meeting will be on the Zoom platform.

The link to the meeting will be emailed one week before the event.

You are advised to use a headset or headphones with an inline microphone to provide the best sound quality and to prevent audio issues for other users. A laptop with a built-in webcam and microphone may be sufficient if you’re in a quiet area but please take the time to check this before the session.

In order to fully participate in the meeting please be willing to use your camera and microphone, although if this is impossible the chat option will be available.

We will be using a Desmos activity so you will need to be using a device which can support this.

As part of our safeguarding procedures please note the following:
(i) It is important that you log in with the names you used when you registered for the meeting otherwise you may not be allowed into the room. If you prefer to use a shortened/alternative name, then do let us know via email in advance of the session.
(ii) You must not pass on any of the registration or Zoom meeting details to anyone else.

Eligibility

This course is for teachers in the AMSP South region. Others are welcome to apply and will gain places if there is capacity.

Participant feedback

"Giving us strategies to take away, showing the benefit of technology."
"I am grateful for these kinds of courses to help me reset my ideas and give me the motivation to try new things again."
"Great session, thank you!"
